March 2017 – Thank you community for your patience and understanding as leadership turnover in OUSD has led to delays from our original Equity Pledge timeline. After the departures of Superintendent Antwan Wilson, Equity Pledge Co-Chair Michael Gaal, and Project Manager Mike Fenocketti from OUSD, we have needed some time to transition new leadership. These changes have not diminished the importance of the Equity Pledge effort or the spirit of collaboration between all involved!

All parties are as committed as ever to collaboration in improving Oakland public schools. Interim Superintendent Dr. Devin Dillon and OUSD Board President James Harris have expressed continued support and prioritization of the Equity Pledge. In addition, David Montes de Oca, OUSD Senior Deputy Chief of Continuous School Improvement, will be stepping into the role of District Co-Chair, alongside Charter Co-Chair Hae-Sin Thomas.

Upcoming Meetings of the Equity Pledge Committee:

  • Tuesday March 21 5:30-7:30 pm at To Be Announced
  • Tuesday April 18 5:30-7:30 pm at To Be Announced
  • Tuesday May 16 5:30-7:30 pm at To Be Announced

The Oakland Public Schools Equity Pledge is a city-wide partnership in Oakland, California, to create a public education system that works in the best interests of all students and their families, by disrupting inequity and creating excellence in our schools.

75% of Oakland public school students attend schools run by the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), and 25% attend public charter schools authorized by OUSD or the Alameda County Board of Education. We are united by our drive to collaborate across schools to adhere to the highest standards of equity, accountability, and excellence, and we welcome more voices to this work.

We believe that all public schools should:

  • Be accessible, serving students of all backgrounds and needs
  • Be held accountable for high standards of performance
  • Have equitable access to resources that are intended to be used for public education
  • Improve their practices and share their knowledge with other public schools
  • Govern transparently with public oversight
  • Collaborate in service of the greater public good

We are excited to have people participating in this work from many different organizations:
